TWILIGHT SAGA NEWS FOR NOVEMBER 2ND

SECRETS FROM THE SET OF NEW MOON

www.etonline.com: “‘New Moon’ is going to be stepped up a whole other notch,” Taylor says. “The whole Wolf Pack is very tightly bound — they are very close.”

Kristen agrees, saying ‘New Moon”s Wolf Pack brings the movie to another level.

“There’s something about the wolves, it’s such a different movie, all of a sudden this completely new world has been introduced,” she says. “It’s more animalistic, more violent.”

MICHAEL SHEEN LOVES VAMPING IT UP

www.latimes.com: It’s a crisp May morning on the set of “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” and Michael Sheen strides into an elaborate reconstruction of an Italianate marble hall in costume as Aro, the head of the Volturi, a menacing group of age-old vampires that metes out justice in the realm of the supernatural. Dressed in a cloak, he’s sporting long, black locks, bright red lips and matching tinted contact lenses that give him a distinctly malevolent look.

When a reporter asks if it’s uncomfortable to look through the eyes of a monster, he suggests, quite politely and quite to the contrary: “No, I think it’s more uncomfortable for you.”

NEW MOON WON’T REPEAT THE GOLDEN COMPASS’ MISTAKES

www.blogs.coventrytelegraph.net: NEXT month sees the release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and director Chris Weitz has been reflecting on his previous filmmaking endeavour, The Golden Compass.

That movie was adapted from the first book in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy and, although visually stunning, was a flawed adaptation and a financial disappointment.

It made most of its money overseas but this was disastrous for the studio, which had sold off the international release rights.

Weitz told Sci Fi Now: “Golden Compass didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to because I wasn’t allowed to be faithful to the book.

“They were afraid of the subject matter and they shouldn’t have been because it wasn’t that horrifically controversial.

“But what happened was that they wanted to turn it into Harry Potter or something and that’s not what it is.

“What it is, is one of the most imaginative works of the 20th century and it was as though they hadn’t even read it. So I had the miserable experience of having my movie completely re-cut.”

NEW MOON KEEPS YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT

www.mtv.com: “The first one is very much a love story, and this one is kind of more about heartbreak and healing, and … the wolves come in and there’s that threat, that danger,” Greene told People over the weekend when she hosted the Yelloween party at Tao Las Vegas dressed as a peacock. “I actually saw the movie about two months ago, and it’s really good.”

According to People, Greene and co-star and co-host Kellan Lutz (who dressed as Batman’s sidekick, Robin) screened some of the flick for partygoers, but they didn’t go into specifics about what they previewed. Greene did, however, explain what makes “New Moon” and “Twilight” so different from each other.

“Edward kind of breaks Bella’s heart, so you definitely see Jacob kind of swoop in to rescue her,” she said of the second installment. “You get to see their chemistry and dynamic. It kind of keeps you on the edge of your seat a little bit more than the first one.”

ROB O’LANTERN PUMPKIN CONTEST WINNER

www.hollywoodcrush.mtv.com: CONGRATULATIONS to the winner of our Rob O’Lantern Pumpkin Carving Contest, Christie (a.k.a. finalist #1). As we promised, the winner would get the chance to write a blog about their love of Rob.

My name is Christie, I’m from Maryland, and I have an addiction. It started out small and harmless, as addictions often do, but it grew and grew and grew. First it was just some books I read. Then it was a movie I watched … several times. Then it was the scrapbook I created. Next, a birthday cake. Then I joined the staff of Novel Novice Twilight, reporting news and writing up special features about the “Twilight” universe and fandom. Now, it’s pumpkin carvings.

VICTORIAN PAINTINGS AND DR. ZHIVAGO INSPIRED WEITZ WHILE CREATING NEW MOON

www.hollywoodcrush.mtv.com:

INSPIRATION: PRE-RAPHAELITE ART

What it is: A group of English painters, poets and critics came together in 1848 to found the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in mutual support of new directions in contemporary art. They felt Raphael’s style of art had a corrupting influence on the craft, and thus rejected his styles: hence, Pre-Raphaelite.

How Chris used it: “We planned for the entire film to feel like a Pre-Raphaelite painting in terms of the darker tones too and the grey tones and colors in the Pacific Northwest as well. We wanted to have a sense of a world of detail and color in Forks and then the iris suddenly opens and you’re in Italy. And also, even when you get to Italy, we start playing with lights and darks.”

INSPIRATION: DAVID LEAN AND AKIRA KUROSAWA

Who are they: Both Lean and Kurosawa are known for filming some of the best remembered big-screen epics filmed. English filmmaker Lean directed “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Doctor Zhivago” and “The Bridge on the River Kwai.” Japanese director Kurosawa is best known for “Ran” and “Seven Samurai.” Both directors are known for their epic styles of filmmaking in developing the classic “blockbuster.”

How Chris used them: “In terms of how we set about shooting [‘New Moon’], it probably feels a bit more like my sad attempt to echo David Lean or Kurosawa or something like that. And that goes down to the tradition of hiring Alexandre Desplat to do the music, because he’s really a romantic composer. In this case, I told him, ‘Let’s do “Doctor Zhivago.”‘”
